We thought coal was "everything," but today coal use is at an all-time high

According to the International Energy Agency, the world produced more electricity from coal in 2021 than ever before.

By 2023, total coal consumption - for power generation, steel production and other industrial purposes - is expected to rise nearly 2 percent to a record high.

Why? Because it's cheap: According to an April 1 Bank of America report, thermal coal burned in power plants is one of the cheapest sources of fuel "on the planet."
