Bitcoin Core team members Ali Sherif and Luke Dashjr have advocated integrating "spam filtering" into Taproot transactions. This would block tokens based on BRC-20 and NFT Ordinals, but would also take the strain off the network.

"I think everyone here knows what has happened to the bitcoin meme in the last 96 hours. Because of the sheer volume of third-party projects like BRC-20, real BTC transactions are overvalued, and that's what's causing massive overloads," Ali Sheriff said in a statement.

This stance has faced criticism from members of the NFT industry. First, they see the potential in these tokens, and second, Bitcoin is primarily a public project. Consequently, developers have no right to make such important decisions alone.
