Empowering Veterans Through Financial Literacy in Central Florida
Discover how Mission United is revolutionizing financial education for veterans in Central Florida.
Orlando’s veterans are finding a new beacon of hope in their journey to acclimate to civilian life, with the Heart of Florida United Way’s “Mission United” program at the helm. Launched in South Florida and now thriving across the state in more than 12 locations, this program is dedicated to offering veterans the tools and knowledge needed for financial independence.
When Veterans Lead the Way
Imagine Jenniffer Hutchinson-Fernandez and Norris Henderson sitting across a table, engaging with veterans who’ve transitioned from military to civilian life. Having served themselves, these case managers understand the trials that accompany such transitions. It’s not just a job for them—it’s a calling.
“We walk the path veterans have walked,” Henderson shares. “Their struggles are our struggles, and that bond makes all the difference.”
Building a Financial Foundation
Since its inception in Orlando, Mission United has celebrated a decade of success, now enhanced by a fresh focus on financial literacy. With workshops starting in August 2025, over 150 veterans have delved into topics like budgeting and homeownership planning. According to Spectrum News 13, these workshops operate three to six times a year, intensely targeting veterans’ financial growth.
Larry Colleton, Commander of American Legion Post 331, remarks, “For many, it’s about that lifelong discipline instilled by military service. We’re guiding them to apply this to managing their finances.”
A Comprehensive Approach to Veteran Support
While financial literacy stands as a cornerstone, the assistance offered by Mission United extends further, reaching into areas such as housing and education. Veterans who participate are not just attending workshops; they’re becoming part of a community designed to uplift and support their every need.
“Every call, every meeting, is an opportunity to remind veterans of the vast resources at their disposal,” Hutchinson-Fernandez asserts, her dedication palpable.
Extending the Circle of Support
Beyond workshops and case management, the goal is clear: to transform Central Florida into a hub for veteran empowerment. “We’re reaching out to veterans unaffiliated with any organizations,” Colleton highlights. “They’re out there and we want them to know—they don’t have to walk this path alone.”
Connect and Flourish
Veterans are encouraged to call or text 2-1-1 to connect with Mission United, ensuring they are never more than a call away from a listening ear and an understanding heart.
A Future of Hope
In the hands and hearts of dedicated staff and veterans alike, the Mission United program is more than a service; it’s a lifeline and a testament to what can be achieved when veterans lead, educate, and inspire their own. As this initiative continues to shine, it is not just transforming individual lives but the fabric of the veteran community in Central Florida.
