Ocean Winds Breaks Ground with Innovative Polish Offshore Windfarm
Ocean Winds secures €2.0Bn financing for BC-Wind, poised to power nearly half a million Polish homes by 2028.
In a landmark moment for renewable energy in Poland, Ocean Winds, the collaborative powerhouse between EDP Renewables and Engie, has chartered a new course by securing a substantial €2.0 billion in project finance. This financial cornerstone paves the way for BC-Wind, their inaugural offshore wind project in the Polish stretch of the Baltic Sea, as stated in Riviera Maritime Media.
Building a Sustainable Future
The European Investment Bank stands at the forefront of financial supporters, providing almost a third of the necessary capital, alongside Instituto de Crédito Oficial Español and a consortium of 13 commercial banks. As the wind blows across the Baltic’s exclusive economic zone, construction gears up for the 390 MW capacity windfarm located 23 km off the Pomeranian coast — a beacon of sustainable development.
Pioneering Energy Transition
Ocean Winds’ Chief Operating Officer Bautista Rodriguez envisions offshore wind as a pivotal force in Poland’s energy transition. He asserts, “In Poland, offshore wind is a key driver of the country’s energy transition and a real opportunity for the development of a revitalised economic sector.” This ambitious project will feature 26 advanced turbines, each equipped with a power boost feature, elevating their capacity from 14 MW to 15 MW, bringing clean energy to nearly half a million households by 2028.
A Commitment to Local Collaboration
With a strategic eye on fostering local expertise and bolstering the domestic supply chain, Ocean Winds is collaborating with Polish companies for critical aspects of the project. The onshore substation and export cable will see the ingenuity of Polish enterprise P&Q and Tele-Fonika Kable. The venture goes beyond mere energy production, promising a wealth of economic opportunities within Poland’s burgeoning offshore wind sector.
Navigating the Windy Waters
Kacper Kostrzewa, the Managing Director of Ocean Wind in Poland, lauds the project’s financial closure as a critical milestone. He remarks on the fusion of local knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, ensuring Poland’s readiness for large-scale offshore endeavors. This venture marks the first Polish offshore windfarm to spearhead integration from national ports, using Świnoujście and Gdańsk as pivotal points for logistics and assembly.
The Road Ahead
As onshore construction kicks off in 2026, Ocean Winds will continue its commitment to community investment by establishing a service base in Władysławowo. The company’s focus remains on nurturing local industry and innovation, positioning Poland as a regional leader in clean energy.
The journey to greener pastures in the Baltic is set with promising winds, standing as a testament to Poland’s growing influence in the renewable energy landscape and Ocean Winds’ unwavering commitment to a sustainable future.
