Rural Communities Empowered Against Cyber Fraud: Bajaj Finance Leads the Way

In a commendable stride towards financial empowerment, the financial literacy initiative Arthsutra Samvad, organized by Bajaj Finance, has made a significant impact in Shillong. The campaign focuses on spreading awareness about the rampant cyber fraud incidents that have plagued the region.

Offline Awareness Gains Momentum

The Meghalaya Cyber Crime Cell, in a proactive approach, has embraced offline awareness sessions to combat the surge in cyber fraud cases across the state. According to Cyber Meghalaya SP Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, these sessions are held three times weekly, primarily targeting rural communities with the assistance of NGOs. “Our offline awareness sessions are more than those online,” said Rasgania, highlighting the effectiveness of on-ground efforts.

Bridging the Technological Divide

While acknowledging the technologically adept nature of Meghalaya’s cybercrime cell, Rasgania pointed out that challenges remain, particularly in manpower. He emphasized the cautious approach needed with AI and social media, advising the public to maintain a critical perspective.

The Role of Financial Literacy

Professor Utpal De from the NEHU Economics Department underscored the importance of financial literacy in the context of evolving digital transactions. “Today’s digital era demands a shift from traditional money-keeping practices to secure banking services,” he stated, illustrating the necessity of informed financial management.

Collaborative Efforts for Rural Empowerment

Lajiedlang Basaiawmoit, representing the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society, added that the Livelihood Programme educates participants on budgeting, savings, and using banking services efficiently. She highlighted the program’s role in securing community members’ financial futures, instilling smart money management practices.

State-Wide Financial Literacy Boost

Arthsutra Samvad is not just confined to Meghalaya; it aligns with the RBI’s national initiative to enhance financial literacy across India. On its centennial year, Bajaj Finance is determined to extend this program to 100 cities, leveraging cultural events, interactive workshops, and expert interactions to foster a lifelong learning environment in finance and digital security.

According to Meghalaya Monitor, this integrated approach not only addresses the pressing issue of cyber fraud but also lays the groundwork for sustainable financial literacy and empowerment across communities. As these programs proliferate, the hope is to see a significant reduction in financial illiteracy, particularly within the vulnerable rural sectors of Meghalaya.
