These social media giants scored 61.47 out of 100 on the study’s index, which evaluated privacy intrusions using 46 indicators, including various data types and user relationships. Shockingly, these apps collect 32 out of 35 possible data types, with 25 directly linked to the user, including sensitive information like physical addresses and user IDs.
Surprising Runners-Up in Data Intrusion
While Instagram and Facebook lead the pack, it’s not just social media apps posing a privacy risk. Grab, a popular taxi ride and food delivery app, ranks third with a score of 55.57. It collects 27 types of data, ranging from payment details to precise location data. Following closely are apps like Threads, Meta Business Suite, and Messenger, all sharing the fourth spot with significant data collection practices.
Shopping Apps and Data Collection
The study also highlights Nordstrom Rack and its main app, Nordstrom, as notable collectors of user data. With scores of 53.62 and 52.54 respectively, these shopping apps gather numerous data types, many of which are both linked and tracked.
