U.S. wants to ban digital yuan
Republican senators intend to ban U.S. marketplaces from hosting programs that allow payment in digital yuan, under the pretext that it would allow Chinese authorities to track the activities of Americans.
According to the U.S. senator's office, the digital yuan e-CNY could provide the Chinese government with the ability to "track all transactions on the Network in real time, creating privacy and security concerns for Americans who join the Network."
The announcement came after WeChat, an app owned by Chinese tech giant Tencent with more than 1.2 billion users, announced it would begin supporting the currency in early 2021.
